In this article, we had the privilege of speaking with Dennis Dobrovolsky, the founder and head coach of Tennis by Dennis Academy, located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. Dennis is a highly respected expert in the world of tennis, with over 30 years of coaching experience. He is qualified as an ITF Level 3 coach and a Tennis Canada High Performance Coach 2, as well as being a certified tennis technique analyst and serve specialist. Dennis shared his valuable insights and inspiring experiences in preparing young athletes for participation in international tournaments. His academy significantly influences the development of young tennis players, helping them achieve success both on and off the court.

What is the importance of international tournaments for young tennis players? Why are they so crucial?

Dennis: International tournaments play a key role in the development of young tennis players. They are not just an opportunity to test their skills but also a chance to immerse themselves in a completely new environment, encounter different playing styles, and adapt to various playing conditions. These tournaments help athletes learn to handle pressure and stress, which is an essential aspect of their growth as players. Additionally, such competitions allow them to evaluate their achievements and understand what areas still need improvement.

Your students recently participated in the Big Mo Florida International tournament. Can you tell us about their performances?

Dennis: In December 2023, our athletes delivered excellent performances at the Big Mo Florida International tournament, which is part of the “Little Mo” series and attracts participants from all over the world. This year, about 700 players from over 60 countries participated in the tournament. Despite the high level of competition, our students achieved significant success: Ilia Dobrovolsky won first place in doubles and took second place in singles, Timofey Dobrovolsky secured second place in singles, and Eva Codita claimed first place in singles and second place in doubles. These achievements highlight the effectiveness of our training methods.

How do you prepare your athletes for such highly competitive tournaments?

Dennis: At Tennis By Dennis Academy, we adhere to a comprehensive approach. We work on the technical, physical, and mental aspects of preparation. Each athlete has an individualized training plan tailored to their level and goals. We place special emphasis on mental preparation: we teach athletes how to cope with pressure and maintain focus. With my extensive coaching experience, I developed the training manual “Comprehensive Guide to Tennis Training”, which helps structure the training process. This guide covers all aspects of preparation and is an essential tool for coaches and athletes.

What key elements do you consider when developing a training program for your athletes?

Dennis: When developing a training program, I always consider the individual characteristics of each athlete, including their physical fitness, technique, and mental qualities. It’s also important to plan the phases of preparation and periodization to ensure athletes peak at the right time for major competitions. Mental preparation, including building resilience to stress and confidence, is crucial. We also use video analysis to improve tactics and game understanding.

What advice would you give to young tennis players aspiring to compete on the international stage?

Dennis: My main advice to young tennis players is to always stay dedicated to their craft and not be afraid to work hard. Success in tennis, like in any sport, requires a lot of time, effort, and sacrifice. However, it’s important not only to train hard but also to train smart. Pay attention to your weaknesses and continuously work on improving them, but also don’t forget to develop your strengths.

What are your future plans for your academy?

Dennis: We strive for continuous improvement of our methods and the creation of optimal conditions for our students. Our main goal is not only to achieve high results in sports but also to help athletes develop holistically. We believe that our students can become leaders both on the court and in life. We will continue to support them in reaching new heights and becoming future stars of world tennis.

Summary

Dennis Dobrovolsky, the founder of Tennis by Dennis Academy, continues to promote the comprehensive development of athletes through training. His guide, “Comprehensive Guide to Tennis Training”, is a crucial tool for achieving success, and participation in international tournaments enhances their skills and confidence. Dennis emphasized that such competitions not only provide the opportunity to compete with the best but also shape future leaders both on and off the court. He is confident that with a comprehensive approach and support, his students can achieve outstanding results and become leaders in world tennis.
