In the realm of academia and community service, few names resonate with as much authority and compassion as that of Rev. Dr. James Henry Harris. His lifelong commitment to education, theology, and social justice has not only shaped the minds of countless individuals but also transformed communities from the ground up. It’s a narrative that intertwines academic excellence with an unwavering dedication to uplifting the marginalized, making Dr. Harris’s story not just inspiring but a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and education.

Born into a large family in Chesterfield County, Virginia, Dr. Harris was one of ten children to Richard and Carrie Anna Harris. From these humble beginnings emerged a visionary who would go on to influence both the ecclesiastical and academic worlds profoundly. Dr. Harris is the proud husband of Dr. Demetrius Harris, and the father of two sons, James Corey and Cameron Christopher.

Dr. Harris’ journey is marked by an impressive accumulation of knowledge and experience—a Master of Arts in philosophical theology from the University of Virginia; Master of Arts in English and African-American Literature from Virginia Commonwealth University; Master of Arts in philosophy and Ph.D. in Urban Studies from Old Dominion University; along with a Doctorate in Ministry focusing on Preaching and African-American Church Studies, from United Theological Seminary.

However, it is not just his academic credentials that stand out but how he has applied this vast reservoir of knowledge for the betterment of society. As the Distinguished Professor and Chair of Homiletics and Practical Theology at Virginia Union University’s School of Theology, as well as pastor at Second Baptist Church (West End) in Richmond, VA., Dr. Harris embodies the rare blend of scholarly insight with practical community engagement.

Dr. Harris’s passion extends beyond preaching from the pulpit or lecturing in classrooms; he is deeply invested in ensuring that young people within his church and community are not only finishing high school but also pursuing higher education or vocational training—a mission critical for breaking cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement prevalent within many communities.
