This interview reveals Dave Sanderson’s life-changing tactics and views. Mentor and resilience specialist Sanderson is regarded. Dave helps people use their defining moments to progress by understanding their thinking and life objectives. He uses the Kolbe Index to create individualized game plans that combine personal values and practical procedures. Dave also advocates for developing a personal “life” brand and reflecting on one’s beliefs and aspirations to make wise judgments. Based on his own life experiences and his book “From Turmoil to Triumph,” Dave emphasizes the importance of having a guide and a large network of people to draw on when things go wrong. He urges CEOs to lead by example by embracing uncertainty as an opportunity to progress and encouraging their people to adapt and be flexible. When times are rough, Dave realizes that teaching and other people’s experiences may lead to success.

How do you approach the task of helping individuals identify and leverage their own defining moments to create opportunities for growth and success?-  first thing I do is give whomever I work with, my personal team, and my clients a KOLBE index so I understand how their mind works.  I then work to understand what their primary need in their life is and what level of consciousness they are currently in which then helps me design a game plan on how they can leverage their defining moment to grow.

Can you discuss the concept of creating a personal “life” brand, and how leaders can use this to guide their actions and decisions?-  what we all have learned is there are two ways to grow, through innovation and marketing.  I encourage others to ask themselves two questions, what’s important in your life, and what has to happen for you to realize that?  Once I find that out, it will help build your personal brand, your mission, and a game plan to make decisions.

What role do you believe mentorship and having a personal “board of directors” plays in helping individuals overcome adversity and achieve their goals?- in my book “From Turmoil to Triumph,” I share the story and lessons of the impact my mentors had on me to not only grow my business but personally, giving me references on how to handle adversity and have resiliency so when that defining moment came on January 15, 2009, I was prepared. What I found out as I wrote this book, the lessons my mentors taught me were the same things my parents taught me but sometimes you need someone from outside your family to give you a different perspective.

How can leaders encourage their teams to embrace uncertainty and view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles? I believe that leaders need to show their teams by their actions.  they need to be congruent with their messaging and actions.  Leaders are readers and I encourage them to share that philosophy with their teams by listening to or reading personal development content which will give references on how others overcame and embraced an uncertain situation and turned it around to grow from it.

What advice would you give to leaders who may be feeling overwhelmed or discouraged in the face of adversity, based on your own experiences and insights?-  Great leaders all have mentors and coaches.  I encourage the people and teams I work with to find a mentor and/or coach who when time gets tough will be there to support and give guidance.  One thing I have learned is when I face adversity or uncertainty, I’m not the first one who encountered it.  I seek out stories or people who overcame and then model the actions they did.
