The 4th Pistang Pinoy in Shizuoka City, Japan, brings together Filipinos from across the prefecture and neighboring cities in a grand celebration of Philippine culture, heritage, and unity. Organized by the Association of Pinoy Volunteers for Assistance (APIVA), this vibrant festival serves as a bridge, not only connecting the Filipino community but also fostering friendship and understanding with the local Japanese population. The event, with the motto “Pistang Pinoy, Atin To! Para sa mga Pilipino! Mabuhay!,” aims to celebrate Filipino identity while opening avenues for cultural exchange, tourism promotion, and community support.

A Festival of Unity and Cultural Exchange

Pistang Pinoy, in its fourth year, is much more than a festive gathering. It is an expression of solidarity among Filipinos living in Shizuoka Prefecture, offering a unique opportunity to unite and celebrate their shared cultural roots. The festival also serves as a platform to foster greater understanding and friendship between the Filipino and Japanese communities, helping Filipino children living and studying in Japan appreciate their heritage while building meaningful connections with their Japanese peers.

The festival creates a space where foreign attendees and Japanese locals can immerse themselves in a rich display of Filipino culture. From traditional food and crafts to performances that showcase the beauty of Philippine music and dance, Pistang Pinoy offers a dynamic experience. By presenting the Philippines’ cultural heritage, the festival uplifts the image of Filipinos in Japan, promoting a greater understanding of their values and traditions.

Empowering and Inspiring Through Art

One of the core missions of the 4th Pistang Pinoy is to uplift the less fortunate, particularly children who have experienced bullying or other forms of hardship. Through art, the festival gives these children a platform to express themselves, discover their talents, and gain confidence. The interaction with professional artists at the event provides them with inspiration and the chance to develop new skills, fostering self-esteem and creativity.

This focus on youth empowerment is a testament to APIVA’s commitment to supporting the Filipino community in Japan, not just through cultural celebrations but by addressing the social and emotional needs of Filipino children living abroad.

Promoting Philippine Tourism and Culture

Beyond being a cultural celebration, Pistang Pinoy is also a powerful platform for promoting Philippine tourism and economic ties between the Philippines and Japan. The event showcases various Filipino tourist destinations, arts and crafts, and traditional food, all while highlighting the beauty of Shizuoka Prefecture and its local attractions. This exchange promotes mutual appreciation between the two countries, enhancing both economic opportunities and cultural awareness.

Representatives from the Philippines, working in collaboration with Shizuoka’s city and municipal tourism offices, bring to life the essence of Filipino culture. Their participation underscores the deep ties between the two nations and the value of such events in bridging gaps and strengthening international relations.

Gratitude to the Supporters

The success of the 4th Pistang Pinoy is owed to the dedication of the organizing committee, led by Chairperson Ana Margarita J. Teodoro, who is also the founder and president of APIVA. Her leadership, alongside Vice Chairperson Rosemarie Ikedda, Treasurer Shirly Ogi, Secretary Arlene Mori, and Assistant Secretary Raquel Masuda, ensured that the event was meticulously planned and executed. Special thanks also go to Acting Auditor Nicole Vincent Aqui Sia and the event’s Public Relations Officers, Michael and Nicole Sia.

The event received overwhelming support from both Filipino and Japanese communities. The Philippine Consulate in Nagoya and the Shizuoka Prefectural and City Government extended their assistance, helping the event thrive. A heartfelt acknowledgment goes to DCOM Money Express, the event’s exclusive presenting sponsor, and other sponsors such as SNS, SQUARE, SMDC, ACT Corp., Jewelry Sakai, Snack J.E., Asahi Staff Service, Life Bus Kakegawa, and Nin’s Kitchen Truck.

Special recognition is also given to the talented performers who graced the event, including the Sidlakan Dance Company of Negros Oriental, GMA Artist Vaness del Moral, and KAMARI, who captivated audiences with their performances. The volunteers, participants, and supporters, from individuals like Mike Grayham to the core team of volunteers, made this event a truly memorable celebration of unity and culture.

Looking Ahead

Pistang Pinoy is not just a celebration of the Filipino identity, but a testament to the power of community and cultural exchange. As it continues to grow in significance each year, it remains committed to promoting Filipino culture, fostering ties with Japanese communities, and offering opportunities for personal and artistic growth.

The festival is a celebration of everything that makes the Filipino spirit resilient and joyous—unity, culture, and compassion. For the Filipino community in Shizuoka, Pistang Pinoy stands as a proud reminder that no matter where they are in the world, they carry with them the vibrant heart of the Philippines.
