Nestled in the heart of Jacksonville, Florida, amidst the vibrant city life, stands a remarkable institution that has become a sanctuary for many seeking faith, fellowship, and enjoyment. This haven, known as St. Paul Church of Jacksonville, Inc., owes its vibrancy and transformative power to one visionary leader: Bishop John E. Guns. Since December 1995, Dr. Guns has not only revitalized what was once a rigid and traditional Southern Baptist church but has also fostered an incredible community of worshippers through his innovative thinking and approachable spirit.
Educated in the public and private school systems of Hampton Roads, Virginia, Bishop Guns embarked on his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Norfolk State University in 1988. His pursuit of theological excellence led him to earn his Master of Divinity in 1991 and complete his Doctoral Degree in Ministry in 2009, from the esteemed Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University.
Beyond his pastoral duties, Bishop Guns is profoundly committed to societal transformation through education and empowerment initiatives. As the Founder of Operation Save Our Sons, he has spearheaded a national movement aimed at guiding at-risk boys toward making positive decisions concerning law and authority. Furthermore, his roles as Founder/Chair of Transforming Communities Community Development Corporation and Empowering Young Minds Learning Center underscore his dedication to uplifting communities through comprehensive development programs.
In July 2021, Dr. Guns took on a new mantle as Dean of the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University (STVU). Under his leadership, STVU is charting an exciting course towards reimagining theological education for the 21st century by partnering with top-tier faculty members dedicated to academic excellence.
Bishop Guns’ influence extends beyond educational realms into global ecclesiastical communities through his Senior Vice-Presidership at Global United Fellowship and founding Presidership at Kingdom Fellowship International. These organizations reflect his unwavering commitment to strengthening churches both locally and globally.
A proud member since 1983 of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Bishop Guns embodies fraternity principles that champion achievement in every field of human endeavor.
Amid these accomplishments, Bishop Guns considers his family – wife Pastor Sonjanique L. Guns; daughters Alexis (Claude) Cheatham, Daijah Guns, Tayler Guns; grandsons Zion John-Eric and Claude Douglas III; granddaughter Zari Alexis – as his most significant achievement. This testament to family values resonates deeply within St. Paul’s community ethos which underscores why Dr. Guns’ leadership is so impactful.
The culmination of Bishop Gun’s tireless work ethic came in 2024 when he was honored with The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award—a recognition reserved for individuals whose service positively influences their communities in profound ways.
On social media platforms like Instagram (@jegministries) or Facebook (@DrJohnEGuns), one can witness firsthand how Bishop John E. Guns leverages these digital spaces to connect with people across the globe. He shares inspirational messages that transcend geographical boundaries, enhancing both spiritual growth and community outreach efforts. This further solidifies his impact beyond Jacksonville’s borders.
This narrative extends beyond celebrating individual accolades; it highlights how one person’s dedication can ignite change across communities. Bishop John E. Guns exemplifies this ethos, fostering environments where every individual feels valued and empowered. His life’s work is a testament to service above self, anchored in faith, hope, and love. This legacy will undoubtedly continue shaping futures for generations to come, thanks to leaders like him.
