Venture into health care
For the past few years, Amazon has been making an effort to make a name for itself in the healthcare sector.
During the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the e-commerce giant created Amazon Pharmacy, which provided medicine while also offering more affordable prices.
PillPack, an online pharmacy that specialized in shipping customers presorted prescriptions in handy packages, was acquired by Amazon in 2018.
Consequently, Amazon Pharmacy was established.

Amazon was able to broaden its customer base and offer a more specialized service in the market for the delivery of prescription pharmaceuticals with the aid of this acquisition.
The company’s venture into the healthcare sector produced Amazon Care, although it was eventually shelved.
For employees of partner firms, Amazon Care provided virtual primary treatment, follow-up care, medication delivery, and video consultations with medical experts.
Amazon had shifted its focus to buy upscale primary care provider One Medical by July 2022.
One Medical was a telemedicine and primary care company that provided healthcare through a network of walk-in clinics and online treatment options.
They provided the following:
- Telemedicine consultations
- Home medication delivery
- Same-day visits
- Online scheduling
- 24/7 virtual care.
Enhancing patient accessibility, convenience, and customization of primary care was the goal of One Medical.
One of the services offered by Amazon is RxPass.
The Prime Prescription Savings Benefit enables customers to save up to 80% on generic medication purchases.
It increases to 40% when using medicines from reliable brands.
Subscription program & layoffs
The world’s largest e-commerce company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, is devoted to cutting expenses while expanding the Prime membership program.
Amazon Prime members get access to a range of advantages and services in return for a monthly charge, including:
- Free two-day shipping on eligible items
- Streaming of movies, TV shows, and music
- Access to a rotating selection of e-books, magazines and other content
Additionally, Prime subscribers get access to exclusive deals and price cuts on a range of products.
Moreover, the service provides free same-day or one-day shipping on qualifying items to a specific number of urban areas as well as free release-date delivery on qualified pre-order products.
Meanwhile, the company intends to lay off approximately 18,000 individuals, freeze corporate positions, and end other projects.
Jassy reiterated Amazon’s goal to focus on long-term opportunities, such as the healthcare sector.
Pharmaceutical competition
Established stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart give Amazon fierce competition in the pharmaceutical industry.
Since its inception, the company has not yet provided an update on the progress of its online pharmacy efforts.
According to Business Insider, a Morgan Stanley study from August revealed that Prime members did not consider Amazon Pharmacy to be one of their most valued services.
According to the chief medical officer, Vin Gupta, Amazon is dedicated to offering a unique pharmacy experience in comparison to other retailers.
“This is still day one for us when we’re at our beginning stages here, but we recognize that change is needed,” said Gupta.
“That’s what patients across the country are telling us, and that’s what Amazon is responding to.”
RxPass does not yet offer insulin or specialized medications, and it is not open to Medicaid or Medicare beneficiaries.
Additionally, Vin Gupta remained coy on whether Amazon will soon boost the medications RxPass offers.
Gupta claims that over 150 million people are using at least one of the medications available through RxPass.
