With plastic surgery remaining as popular as ever, many medical professionals, properly trained or otherwise, have attempted to make a quick dollar out of the practice. Unfortunately, an untrained practitioner may provide less than ideal work for their patients. But experts like Jordan-based consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Hussein Altarawneh are continuing to work hard to maintain the integrity of the otherwise respectable profession of plastic surgery.

The Experience Behind the Skill

Dr. Altarawneh, who has owned and operated the Amman Plastic Surgery & Laser Center in Jordan since August 2012, prides himself on his adherence to his values as a healthcare professional. He relies on his 30 years of training, education, and practice in the field of plastic surgery.

When asked why he wanted to go into plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Altarawneh stated, “I have always harbored a profound desire to assist those around me. The field of reconstructive and plastic surgery captivates me because it allows me to bring satisfaction and relief to patients regarding their appearance. This pursuit aligns with my perfectionist nature, fueling my passion to excel and fulfill my aspiration to enhance the lives of others through my work.”

Medical practice is not always idealistic, however, as Dr. Altarawneh explains some of the challenges he’s encountered during his time as a plastic surgeon:

“Naturally, I have encountered numerous challenges throughout my career, with the most prominent being the intense competition in both general and plastic surgery. I have had to exert extraordinary effort to advance and attain my desired position. This journey has demanded significant dedication to demonstrate my knowledge and skills, distinguishing myself among my colleagues and earning the trust and confidence of prospective patients.

In recent years, we have witnessed individuals from unrelated professions encroaching upon our field, often without the requisite qualifications. By offering cheaper alternatives, they have jeopardized patient safety, exposing them to significant health risks due to the use of uncertified and unreliable materials. These individuals lack the extensive knowledge and expertise that a surgeon, who has devoted many years to mastering the necessary skills, possesses to deliver the highest standard of medical care.”

Standing Out in a Crowded Field

As Dr. Altarawneh noted, the influx of unskilled practitioners serves as a potential health risk to those seeking plastic surgery services. This dilution of quality surgeons makes Dr. Altarawneh’s work all the more valuable and necessary, operating as a beacon for patients. When asked what exactly makes his practice stand out, Dr. Altarawneh stated the following:

“I believe what distinguishes my practice is my vision for my patients. Recently, we have observed a trend where both female and male patients undergoing plastic surgery emerge with a somewhat homogenized appearance, as though conforming to a standardized ideal of beauty. I always emphasize to my patients that each face and body is unique. My approach is to utilize my expertise to highlight and enhance their inherent beauty, rather than transforming them into someone else.”

A Vision for the Future

Although Dr. Altarawneh’s contributions to plastic and reconstructive surgery have helped bring joy and self-satisfaction to many people, he has no plans on stopping anytime soon. “I am committed to continuous learning and staying current with the latest techniques, methods, and medications to ensure that I provide the highest standard of care for my patients, he says. “My dream is to establish… a non profitable pediatric cancer center that will endure long after my career ends, serving future generations for decades.”
